Job Role Summary

Under the direction of a licensed clinical staff member, the CMA assists the providers of a healthcare site with the facilitation of client visits and procedures, routine laboratory tests, medication delivery, and referrals. The CMA will work hand-in-hand with the providers to achieve quality outcomes for the population of the practice site. Working with diverse populations, with varying language and cultural backgrounds, the CMA must be flexible and adaptive in providing continuity of care. 

Associated Job Duties

Responsibility 1: 60%

  • Perform diagnostic procedures, treatment regimens, and administer injections/medications according to physician/advance practice provider orders and/or MCPHD protocols and policies
  • Deliver clinic services including blood draws for testing, point of care testing, counseling/education (under direction of licensed clinical staff), referrals for services, and medication follow-up
  • Administer vaccines safely and accurately according to MCPHD policies/procedures
  • Collect demographic information/health history, patient knowledge/beliefs, and extent of illness/issue for continuity of care
  • Deliver targeted, culturally appropriate information to help client/s understand health promotion and disease prevention, policies, regulations, local code
  • Adhere to applicable OSHA standards: exposure to bloodborne/airborne pathogens, toxic substances, or exposure to other hazards during assignments

Responsibility 2: 25%

  • Participate in coordinating care for individuals/families of vulnerable populations or high-risk groups; collaborate with MCPHD, State Department of Health, other community agencies
  • Advocate on behalf of client/families/groups; participate in assessing and evaluating health care services to ensure that people are informed of available health department and community programs/services, assist in the utilization of services
  • Collaborate in and contribute to individual, team, and departmental performance management, quality improvement and evaluation activities
  • Under direction of licensed medical care provider, ensure labs and/or diagnostic services are completed
  • Make appropriate referral to agencies/organizations for needed client services, per medical Provider orders
  • Utilize appropriate methods (interpreters, group session, one-on-one) for interacting effectively and professionally with persons of all ages from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, educational, racial/ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientations/lifestyles, physical abilities
  • Inform, educate, and empower individuals and communities at risk regarding accessing healthcare and benefits of personal well-being

Responsibility 3: 10%    

  • Documents patient assessment and intervention data in medical records. Uses established medical record forms, databases, and documentation practices
  • Obtains and completes appropriate client “Consent for Care” forms, ensures client confidentiality and maintains orderly medical records. Follows established Public Health medical records policies and procedures as well as the State, Federal, organizational laws and policies that govern the release of health care information 
  • Data entry is clear, concise, accurate, and recorded in a timely manner within the electronic medical record system (INSIGHT) database (training provided)
  • Stays current on software and computer updates
  • Utilizes Outlook for daily appointments, meetings, and assignments (training provided)
  • Adheres to ethical principles and MCPHD policy in collection, maintenance, use, and dissemination of data and information


Responsibility 4: 5%

  • Meetings/In-services/Seminars
  • Participates in staff and periodic committee meetings
  • Assumes responsibility for own professional growth and development by pursing education; Attends in-services/seminars to remain current in profession
  • Read job related information/materials/procedures and policies that is required for enhanced job performance
  • Participates in a minimum of two (2) H.O.P.E. events annually
  • Attends mandated meetings/trainings, HIPPA, BBP, Emergency Preparedness, etc. 
  • Employee will protect and maintain confidentiality of each client’s and each employee’s medical and personal information that may be obtained in the course of job related provision of care or employment
  • Employee must complete National Incident Management System (NIMS) training 100 and 700
  • In the event of a public health emergency, employee must be available to work on weekends or a schedule that would differ from a normal assigned workday
  • Participates in public health emergency preparedness exercises and in the response to public health emergencies, as directed
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • A certified Medical Assistant Certification from an accredited teaching establishment
  • At least 2-3 years of experience working as a medical assistant, preferably in a medical office or health care setting
  • Computer skills including typing skills of a minimum of 30 words per minute

Licenses/Certifications Required

  • Current CMA certification
  • Valid Indiana driver’s license
  • Access to own vehicle and current automobile insurance
  • CPR certified

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability in obtaining patient histories, performing injection/immunization procedures, phlebotomy, and exam room preparation
  • Ability to function independently and seek supervision appropriately
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure of deadlines and stressful situations, set priorities,  and be flexible 
  • Requires excellent organizational skills and attentiveness to detail
  • Must be able to read, write, and follow written/verbal instructions in English
  • Requires ongoing knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner and effectively deal with the demands of clients/patients, agencies, community partners, and government entities
  • Must be flexible in working with a variety of community partners
  • Requires skills in effective interpersonal communication in a multi-cultural setting
  • Work collaboratively and diplomatically with colleagues, personnel, and the public
  • Requires ongoing knowledge of Marion County communities and agencies
  • Must maintain confidentiality of information per HIPPA guidelines

Working Environment

  • May be required to travel in state (related to work conferences, and/or community sites)
  • Unconfined sitting – client interviews, computer data entry (charting), etc., standing or walking to and from community sites; climbing stairs; steady use of hands or fingers; lifting, carrying, etc. with arms and legs (possibly as much as 20 pounds)
  • May be exposed to allergens of all types (i.e., pets, dust, smoke, etc.)
