Job Role Summary

This position, under the general supervision of the Breastfeeding Coordinator is responsible for assisting Breastfeeding Coordinator (BFC) in development of policies, procedures, implementation and evaluation of the breastfeeding program within established federal, state and local agency guidelines and regulations of Women, Infants and Children Supplemental Nutrition Program (WIC).
Directly supervise peer counselors and manage breastfeeding services and supplies within assigned clinics.  Establishes relationships with providers within clinics that see patients as outreach for the WIC BF team.  WIC BF Leads have expertise to help increase the community breastfeeding initiation and duration rates upon several platforms.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in nursing, public health or nutrition (RD/RN), health education, social services, or other health-related field preferred
  • Master’s Degree preferred.
  • 3+ years WIC experience preferred, with demonstrated ability in supervising professional and paraprofessional staff.
  • Ongoing education and/or training in lactation management.
  • Must be able to function as a team leader and advisor as it relates to employee management and the development of breastfeeding efforts internally and externally.
  • Access to own transportation.
Licenses/Certifications Required
  • Current International Board certified Consultant (IBCLC) preferred; must obtain IBCLC certification within 1 year of hire date.
  • Professional licenses/certification as appropriate.
  • Valid Indiana driver’s license.

  • Prepare nutrition education materials.
  • Evaluate eligibility criteria for the IN WIC program.
  • Knowledge WIC Supplemental Nutrition Program and social and culture backgrounds as they relate to proper nutrition and breastfeeding.
  • Must be able to function as a team leader and advisor as it relates to supervision and development of breastfeeding efforts internally and externally.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Proper telephone etiquette and computer skills in Word and Excel, etc. 
  • Use effective and efficient time management skills under pressure of patient volume and projects.
  • Flexibility to adjust to changing program/department needs and activities.
  • Effective response to different situations and time limitations
  • Has good customer service skills, relating to persons of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds, and communicating in a professional, courteous, and tactful manner. 
  • Work independently to complete projects and solve problems.
  • Pleasantly communicate verbally and in writing with the public, assigned hospital staff and WIC staff.
  • Bilingual is preferred.
  • Organized and responsible to maintain clean, safe working environment
  • Work effectively on a multidisciplinary team.
Working Enviornment
  • Some travel required between program locations and within community.
  • Exposure to communicable illnesses and diseases due to direct client contact.
  • Some physical lifting and carrying supplies, walking and standing (Must be able to lift 35 pounds) .
