Program Summary:
This non-paid Volunteer position will provide end of life compassionate companionship and will be a reassuring presence to dying patients who would otherwise die alone. With the support of the nursing staff and physicians, these compassionate companions will offer patients a dignified death with a presence at the bedside.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Be available to sit for 3 hours at a time interval of your choosing
- Complete all necessary paperwork and evaluation forms through Eskenazi Health Volunteer Services Department
- Complete the NODA Orientation Compassionate Companion Training
- Follow all policies and procedures set forth by Eskenazi Health and the NODA program
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Must comply with HIPPA standards, policies and procedures of maintaining confidentiality of patient and medical information, and follow the hospital’s infection control guidelines.
- Volunteers are not permitted to:
- Position or lift patients in/out of bed, chair or wheelchair.
- Transport patients confined to hospital beds.
- Communicate clinical information to patients, clients, visitors or family members.
- Document clinical information.
- Interpret/translate clinical information in another language.
Requirements:
- Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must not have experienced the loss if a loved one within the past year.
- Successful completion of the application, interview, hospital volunteer orientation, and position specific departmental training.
- Volunteers will be required to submit to criminal background inquiry, national governmental sanction check, child abuse clearance, sexual offender registry clearance and Occupational Health Screening.
- Volunteers must be able to sit for long periods of time
- Must possess a sensitivity to, concern for and empathy towards the emotional and/ or spiritual needs of the patient
- Volunteer must work cooperatively with others as well as independently
- Must be able to interact in a non-judgmental manner with persons of all ethnicities, backgrounds, and faiths
- Volunteer must understand and follow directions
