Job Role Summary
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Under general supervision is competent to perform routine safety inspections and preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment
- Utilizes Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) instructions to accurately maintain and perform repairs to vehicles and related equipment
- Prepares accurate and legible records of maintenance and repairs
- Ensures records are securely stored
- Informs EMS Logistics Section Chief if damage to vehicle/equipment is assumed to be due to driver abuse or neglect
- Keeps up-to-date with the changing advancement of today's equipment and vehicles by participating in educational programs and in-service meetings
- Attends meetings as required
- Maintains a safe, secure and clean environment that is compliant to all regulations
- Initiates clean-up as necessary
- Helps maintain stock levels by assisting in ordering and receiving parts as needed
- Follows established departmental and hospital policies and procedures
- Coordinates vehicle maintenance schedule through EMS Logistics Section Chief
- Maintains a valid Indiana driver's license that is compliant with the Vehicle/Driver Safety Program
- Communicates accurate and detailed information to coworkers
- Effectively communicates using the MECA radio system
Associated Job Duties
- Provides in field repairs/support when needed
- Participates in training related to equipment maintenance and operation
- During mass casualty event may be required to safely operate an emergency vehicle
- Maintains safety and security of building, tools, equipment and supplies
- Performs other job related duties as assigned
Job Requirements
- Completion of a high school education or equivalent (GED) with at least 5 years of work experience in the field of automotive and light truck repair
- Specialized education from an accredited automotive technical school with 1 year of related work experience
- Must possess a valid U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Refrigerant Technician's Certificate for R-12 & 134A systems within 90 days of employment
- Maintain a valid Indiana driver's license that is compliant with the Vehicle/Driver Safety Program
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Proficient in general diagnostic and repair of emergency system related accessories (e.g. air horn, siren, strobe lighting system, suction units, invertors, shore line powered equipment, etc.)
- Knowledge of Indiana Ambulance EMS certification requirements
- Knowledge and application of garage safety precautions
- Knowledge of Universal Safety Precautions
- Ability to complete required forms legibly and accurately
- Knowledge and ability to operate a two-way radio
- Ability to operate vehicles and equipment including ability to operate an emergency vehicle possibly in adverse weather conditions
- Knowledge of the theories principles and practices of automotive repair and preventive maintenance procedures, occupational hazards, safety equipment, electrical systems, including alternator, starter, battery; electronic systems, emissions testing/performance, use of tools and fasteners, heat/air conditioning systems, suspension and steering, engine performance, major engine repair, major transmission/transaxle, light duty diesel repair, warranty repair, preventive maintenance procedures, Supplemental Restraint Systems
- Considerable skill in the use of all tools and fasteners and related equipment of the trade, including but not limited to: starting and charging systems analyzer, air conditioning service machine, digital volt meter, amp meter, and other related machine shop equipment etc.
- Considerable ability to: Inspect and repair automotive systems and equipment, read and understand automotive manuals and publications both written and digital, use of electrical, air driven and manual equipment and all related tools of the trade with necessary dexterity, coordination, sight and strength, perform all duties
- Certificates of Training are preferred in the following areas: Brakes, Electrical Systems, Electronic Systems, Heat & A/C Systems, Suspension & Steering and Engine Performance & Drivability (Gasoline and Diesel)
Responsibility
- Supervisory: None
- For maintaining confidentiality of information
- Work documentation and storage of repair records
- Maintain inventory of personal owned tools necessary to complete routine maintenance/repairs to vehicles
Judgment
Employee may work under general supervision and receives general guidance on work priority with substantial employee latitude
Contacts - Internal/External
- Contact with organization-wide staff concerning equipment problems and operation. Contact within department to advise, respond to service needs and solve problems. External contacts with vendors to obtain parts and service.
Special Effort Required
- Must be able to interact with the public and personnel from other departments in a positive manner
- Must be able to work in awkward or strained position during certain repair procedures
- Heavy lifting is occasionally required
- Must be able to follow detailed repair instructions
Working Environment
- Duties are performed inside and outside the repair facility. Outside duties will require exposure to the various weather conditions.
