Job Role Summary
The Summer Youth Nutrition Educator is a temporary summer position funded by the Summer Youth Program Fund with the goal of enriching youth summer programs with nutrition education. The Summer Youth Nutrition Educator will be responsible for planning and implementing nutrition programming for requested community partners and evaluating the effectiveness of the programming. The Summer Youth Nutrition Educator will also participate in community health fairs. This position may require some evenings and weekends.
Essential Duties
- Develop nutrition focused summer camp sessions for elementary age children and teens.
- Develop materials to support the programs, as needed, maintaining continuity of instruction among curriculum levels.
- Deliver nutrition programming to a variety of different youth summer camps in Indianapolis.
- Adapt program to teach students of diverse populations at age-appropriate levels.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of nutrition programming using pre and posttest evaluations and develop a report to summarize the outcomes of the program.
- Procure food and supplies needed for summer camp sessions. Pack and transport supplies needed to deliver nutrition programs on site.
- Participate in summer health fairs as requested by community partners.

Associated Job Duties
- Create educational materials/programs providing an emphasis on nutrition and wellness (i.e., articles, curricula, newsletters, posters, handouts, displays, recipes and visual aids) to be used at health fairs, exhibitions, community events, etc.
- Design nutrition newsletter (Pantry Press, Teen Chef, Produce Press) as requested by Nutrition Services full time staff.
- Develop recipes for the Nutrition Services program as requested by the Nutrition Services full time staff.
- Represent MCPHD on internal/external committees for improvement of the community nutrition and wellness status as needed.
- Maintain confidentiality of all client records and information, as specified by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) and complete annual HIPPA training
- Complete annual Blood Borne Pathogens training.
- Complete the required National Incident Command System (NIMS) and Incident Command System (ICS) level training, participate in responding to public health emergencies as directed
Qualifications
- Actively pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in nutrition or dietetics, health science, public health, or related field is required
- Preferred dietetic intern or 4th year student with experience in nutrition education and curriculum design
- Must have valid Indiana driver’s license and must possess or have access to reliable transportation for in-county travel
- Certified Health Educator (CHES) certification preferred
- ServSafe certified preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Must be capable of presenting to a variety of populations in a wide array of locations such as schools, daycares, businesses, senior centers, and other community settings where a community nutrition program might be requested
- Excellent verbal and written skills; excellent organizational skills
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Internet Explorer, and office equipment such as fax machine, copier, and telephone
- Must be able to work both independently and as part of a team
- Must be able to take initiative and prioritize workload
- Knowledge of safe food handling and sanitation
- Cultural competence
- Spanish language skills preferred
- Flexibility to adapt to changing program/department needs and activities
Working Environment
- Must be able to lift up to 45 lbs.
- Must be able to transport educational materials, demo foods and equipment or AV equipment necessary for all community nutrition programming
- Auto travel within the county to homes, clinics, meetings, etc
- Potential exposure to communicable illness and disease resulting from frequent public contact and travel throughout the community
- Some exposure to warm temperatures in schools or settings that lack air conditioning
