Job Role Summary
The Senior Medical Assistant serves as lead medical assistant for occupational health clinic- specialty care clinics. This position provides patient care which takes into account patient response to care provided, patient needs, problems, capabilities, limitations, and progress toward goals. Alters activities/behaviors to ensure adequate care appropriate to the age of patients served (i.e., pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric). Proactively contributes to Eskenazi Health’s mission: Advocate, Care, Teach and Serve with special emphasis on the vulnerable populations of Marion County.
Job Requirements
• Graduation from an education program for the medical assistant required
• Certified or Registered Medical Assistant required
• Minimum of 4 years of experience with 1 year of Eskenazi Health experience required; External hires must have 5 years of experience
• Previous experience as a lead required
• CPR certification (American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR certification is preferred)
• Current TB Education certification is preferred
• Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred; may be deemed necessary at certain locations
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
• Assist Clinic Manager with ensuring that patient appointments run smoothly and in order.
• Maintains a safe patient/clinic environment; practice is in compliance with Eskenazi Health’s safety standards
• Exhibits legal and ethical professional conduct, follows organizational/site-specific protocols/processes
• Provides patient care which takes into account patient response to care provided, patient needs, problems, capabilities, limitations, and progress toward goals. Alters activities/behaviors to ensure adequate care appropriate to the age of patients served (i.e., pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric)
• Integrates cultural/population specific diversity needs into patient care as well as integrating physiological, psychological and cultural needs
• Measures and records vital signs, heights, weights, other parameters including pain assessment
• Interviews patient and records history, chief complaint, other findings
• Calls prescriptions (except Schedule II medications) to pharmacy for the provider per written orders
• Prepares patients for examinations and performs routine screening tests including EKGs
• Assists provider with exams and minor office procedures
• Collects and processes lab specimens including phlebotomy
• Monitors follow-up of tests and lab studies done and notifies provider
• Performs point-of-care testing, including pertinent quality control testing, documenting results
• Prepares and administers medications (with exceptions per organizational or site-specific guidelines) with provider written order
• Demonstrates competence/accountability in the administration of medications, treatments, performing tests
• Changes/applies dressings, removes sutures, other minor procedures
• Accurately, legibly, legally documents findings, services provided (including medication administration), education/instructions given, completes other required documentation
• Maintains supplies and equipment (stocking/ordering) including routine stocking of exam rooms
• Alters activities/behaviors to provide population-specific and age-specific care
• Assists with the orientation of other staff members including Medical Assistant Externs
• Serves in role of Medical Assistant Preceptor
• Coordinate all open cases with specialty providers, ensuring notes are reviewed with the Occupational Health medical director.
• Scanning all work related injury documents are scanned into EPIC.
• Track all employee work related exposures.
