Job Role Summary
The STD Program Epidemiologist is responsible for providing epidemiologic support to the STD Program and overseeing elements of STD surveillance. This position ensures appropriate collection, management, analysis, and dissemination of public health surveillance data relevant to the STD Program. The STD Program Epidemiologist compiles, analyzes, and presents data to identify and describe patterns of health outcomes and their determinants, reviews and prioritizes STD case reports for further investigation, maintains the clinic and reportable condition datasets stored in house, informs and contributes to program evaluation, and conducts other tasks related to quality assurance and continuous quality improvement.
Associated Job Duties
- Designs, conducts, interprets, and reports statistical analyses of epidemiologic trends to STD Program leadership, collaborating agencies, and the community
- Assists with updating and maintaining clinic and reportable condition datasets
- Identifies data needs and collaborates with program staff to develop solutions for these needs across the STD Program
- Prepares and delivers reports and presentations relevant to the STD Program for professional and lay audiences
- Reviews and prioritizes reported STD cases for further public health investigation and intervention
- Evaluates the accuracy and completeness of laboratory and case reporting and maintains collaborative working relationships with reporting entities to support STD surveillance functions
- Contributes to the design and completion of program evaluation activities
- Contributes to the design of strategies to improve disease detection and control in relation to epidemiologic trends
- Participates in the development of grant proposals and reports as needed
- Responds to various internal and external data requests
- Participates in team, program, and special project meetings and initiatives as requested by STD Program leadership and provides epidemiologic support for relevant matters
- Develops and maintains expertise in all program-relevant areas, including but not limited to: STD/HIV fundamentals, testing and treatment recommendations, research methods and ethical research and data management practices, statistical analysis systems (i.e., SAS), STD surveillance, and national, state, local, and organizational policies and performance standards. Training is provided
- Participates in public health emergency preparedness exercises and in the response to public health emergencies, as directed
- Participates in a minimum of two H.O.P.E. events totaling a minimum of eight (8) hours annually
- Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Completion of a master’s degree in Public Health or a related discipline required. Concentration in Epidemiology strongly preferred
- A minimum of 1 year of experience with data management and computerized data analysis utilizing SAS, PowerBI, or another similar program required
- Strong computer skills and experience with Microsoft Excel and Access
- Experience working in the STD/HIV field or other infectious disease areas preferred
- Experience working with GIS preferred
Licenses/Certifications Required
- Valid Indiana drivers license

- Excellent verbal, written, and visual communication skills to effectively present information and work cooperatively with all levels of staff and community members
- Advanced knowledge of and ability to apply the use of computers and systems for the collection, analysis, and management of data
- Ability to manage a variety of tasks and responsibilities simultaneously with accuracy and close attention to detail, with frequent changes and strict deadlines
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical information
- Sensitivity to and experience working with ethnically, culturally, and sexually diverse individuals, communities, agencies, and organizations that comprise the STD/HIV pubic health field.
Working Environment
Standard office and clinic settings. On-the-job duties require talking, hearing, sitting, and frequent computer and phone use
Must be able to perform job duties in an environment with moderate noise level (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic)
