Eskenazi Health serves as the public hospital division of the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 333-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus including at a network of Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.

Job Role Summary

Serves as a Spanish writing professional by providing accurate translation services for documents and materials about medicine, including clinical treatment plans, marketing, legal, and other subjects from English to Spanish. Ensures that translations convey the meaning of the original documents with attention and respect for cultural differences between source and target languages. Additionally, participates in the quality review process by proofreading documents. 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Precisely and accurately translate Eskenazi Health documents or materials, including medical, marketing, legal, and others, from English to Spanish.
  • Proofread Spanish projects during the review process to ensure linguistic, cultural, and branding accuracy.
  • Utilize reliable resources to research medical, legal, cultural, and other terminology pertinent to translation projects.
  • Serve as cultural and linguistic resource for internal departments and stakeholders.
  • Maintain strict patient confidentiality in accordance with Eskenazi Health policies and standards.
  • Maintain protected health information in accordance with HIPAA privacy guidelines and regulations.
  • Communicate with requestors and team members to ensure a clear understanding and adherence of client’s expectations and deadlines.
  • Efficiently organize translation and proofreading assignments as well as completed tasks to ensure that the translation process flows smoothly.
  • Meet periodically with translation team members to update team glossary, review projects, and share useful learning experiences.
  • Proactively contributes to Eskenazi Health’s mission: Advocate, Care, Teach and Serve with special emphasis on the vulnerable population of Marion County.  
     

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent, in the field of translation, medicine, law, marketing or another related field.
  • At least three years of experience working with translation of written documents from English to Spanish. Spanish medical translation experience is preferred.
  • Trained in medical terminology in both English and Spanish. Legal or marketing terminology in both working languages is a plus.
     

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Native oral and written fluency in Spanish.
  • Spanish translation skills.
  • Completion of National Certification in Spanish Translation, or working toward it, is preferred but not required.
  • Current knowledge of medical terminology and procedures.
  • Ability to accurately translate medical information from English to Spanish.
  • Knowledge of Spanish writing standards defined by the R.A.E. (spelling, grammar, punctuation).
  • Strong cultural understanding of the Hispanic communities settled throughout the service area.
  • Ability to recognize both literal and nuanced meanings in the source document (English) and to convey the meaning to Spanish in a clear, culturally appropriate way.
  • Ability to discern need to use appropriate tone and register to communicate Spanish medical and general information to the target audience.
  • Ability to conduct effective research using reliable sources.
  • Awareness of Hispanic cultural diversity.
  • Ability to work in a team.
  • Computer skills and strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Adobe tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF).
  • Familiarity with computer-assisted translation programs, TRADOS preferred.
  • Great attention to detail and organizational skills.
