Job Role Summary

The Department of Water Quality and Hazardous Materials Management specializes in addressing environmental risks to Marion County and its residents related to water quality, indoor and ambient air, occupational hazards, land quality, and hazardous materials. The environmental health scientist serves as the Department’s subject matter expert on the role environmental and occupational hazards affect human and environmental health and effective interventions to reduce the risk to these hazards. The position also includes organization, management and evaluation of various programs and projects within the department as needed such as the wellfield business inspection program or informatics and data management projects.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors of Arts or Science in environmental health, environmental science, industrial hygiene, public health, biology or closely related degree with science based curricula.
  • Masters Degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of previous experience in environmental health program management, research, or project management. 
  • Registered Environmental Health Specialist preferred.
     

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to use web-based resources and scientific databases to research environmental health issues.
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws, rules, regulations on hazardous materials/hazardous waste, environmental sampling guidelines, and hazardous materials.
  • Knowledge of public health principles and practices used in determining and eliminating health hazards 
  • Knowledge of industrial hygiene and environmental sampling methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of laboratory methods and tests for environmental contaminants in water, land, and air.
  • Ability to plan and organize work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to use software available within the agency to perform research, recording keeping, communication, data analysis and interpretation.
     

Working Enviornment

  • Job tasks include field work to conduct investigations, observations, surveillance, and sampling as well as office functions to review staff work and meetings.
  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds for short periods.
  • In county driving is expected.
  • Exposure to community members and regulated community is possible.
