About Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center

Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center, Indiana's first community mental health center and one of the first CCBHCs in Indiana, provides comprehensive care for emotional and behavioral problems, including severe mental illness and substance abuse. The Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center offers both inpatient and outpatient services, including several outreach centers as well as clinic- and community-based services.

 

 

About the Bob and Kathi Postlethwait Mental Health Recovery Center

The Kathi & Bob Postlethwait Mental Health Recovery Center is a 24-hour short-term protective care service for persons experiencing mental illness. The 30-bed unit provides a full range of inpatient hospitalization services. These services include stabilization that prepares patients for integration back into the community or for transfer to a long-term care facility. We treat both the physical and mental health diagnoses of our clients. If the medical diagnosis is not stable, the client will stay on the medical unit with psychiatry consulting. Services are also provided for Marion County prisoners with psychiatric diagnoses. Clients will be provided medication management, physician care, nursing care, groups offered with a multidisciplinary approach, and discharge planning offeredy by our social services team.

In collaboration with the Program Coordinator, John and Kathy Ackerman Mental Health Professional Development Center (“Ackerman Center”) Director and Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center (“SEMHC”) inpatient leadership, the RN Training and Development Facilitator – Inpatient (“Training and Development Facilitator”) develops, implements, and evaluates all Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center (“SEMHC”) inpatient team member education. The Training and Development facilitator identifies and utilizes appropriate methods of instruction, with an emphasis on adult learning techniques, to develop and train members of the multidisciplinary inpatient psychiatric team.  Utilizing feedback and quality/outcome data, this position enhances team members’ competency and patient care by developing and training inpatient psychiatric nursing staff, support specialists, students, and other psychiatric team members through treatment role modeling, informal discussions, observations, and formal training and development presentations.

Am I Qualified?

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited school of nursing required; Master’s degree in nursing education preferred 
  • Valid Indiana license as a registered nurse 
  • Three years of current clinical nursing practice 
  • Experience with facilitating group training with five (5) to twenty-five (25) participants, as well as one-on-one coaching
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Valid Indiana driver’s license that meets Eskenazi Health's driving policy requirements

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Embraces, understands, and operates under the Recovery Model, including AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank You) as well as the spirit of motivational interviewing
  • Collaborates with Program Coordinator, Ackerman Center Director, and SEMHC inpatient leadership to develop, implement, and evaluate all education for new and established SEMHC inpatient team members
  • Identifies and utilizes appropriate methods of instruction with an emphasis on adult learning techniques to develop and train members of the multi-disciplinary inpatient psychiatric team
  • Utilizes principles of performance improvement, feedback and quality/outcome data to improve team members’ competency and patient care through development and training of inpatient psychiatric nursing, support specialist, student and other psychiatric team members through treatment role modeling, informal discussions, observations, as well as education materials, formal training and professional development presentations
  • Identifies gaps in professional development for current team members according to program and role, with special attention to special populations, public health trends, as well as regulatory requirements, and works with leadership to close those gaps
  • Serves as a role model, mentor, and change agent for team members
  • Models and teaches professional practice, problem-solving, decision-making, and critical thinking skills for team members
  • Positively and proactively impacts patient care indirectly by developing, implementing, and evaluating standards of care, clinical practice guidelines, and policies/procedures, as well as through involvement in workgroups and committees
  • Maintains a flexible schedule as necessary to meet the needs of patients, team members, and the organization
  • Designs teaching aids, training handbooks, demonstration models, multimedia visual aids, computer tutorials, and reference works
  • Implements and trains training programs, products, and interventions from external vendors as needed
  • Measures progress, evaluates training effectiveness, and ensures timely completion of all training initiatives for team members
  • Recognizes and responds timely to patient care, risk, safety, and regulatory issues to maintain a safe and therapeutic environment and conducts any necessary follow-up to ensure resolution
  • Maintains and generates education data as requested for benchmarking and reporting
  • Participates in professional development activities to keep current with evidence-based approaches to training students and adult learners
  • Assists with quality review and action planning to ensure training is well-developed, satisfies plans of correction as needed, is clearly trained, and is completed by students and team members by assigned deadlines

  • Knowledge of pedagogy that best trains adult learners of various backgrounds, education, and experiences in a fast-paced, potentially high-stress environment
  • Knowledge of mental health and/or substance use disorders

  • Skilled in developing lesson plans, teaching objectives, and competencies/assessments

  • Ability to assess system needs and function autonomously to develop and implement programs to improve patient care

  • Ability to be both clear and concise in written and verbal communications

  • Ability to review/critique pertinent research literature related to specialty areas and promote research utilization to improve patient care
  • Ability to teach and provide direct care to patients utilizing person-centered and recovery model approaches
