Kathi & Bob Postlethwait Mental Health Recovery Center: This 24-hour inpatient mental health unit caters to individuals experiencing acute mental health conditions requiring more intensive services and support.  Our 30-bed unit offers a full range of inpatient acute care services including fun, interactive group programming that keeps our patients engaged and active while they’re staying with us.

What To Expect

Within the Triage Unit, the RN Coordinator assumes a leadership position that encompasses the responsibilities of a Staff Nurse while delivering expert-level professional nursing care to patients. Operating autonomously as a practitioner, this role showcases advanced problem-solving, decision-making, and critical thinking skills tailored to the unique challenges of behavioral health. In addition to providing specialized clinical care, the RN Coordinator actively engages in leadership functions within the behavioral health context, coordinating patient care activities and guiding the nursing team. This involves overseeing the implementation of behavioral health interventions, ensuring a therapeutic environment, and promoting the well-being of patients with mental health needs. The autonomy in this role empowers the RN Coordinator to demonstrate a wealth of clinical expertise, foster collaboration among the behavioral health team, and contribute significantly to the enhancement of patient care quality within the behavioral health unit.

Am I Qualified

  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing, bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Current Indiana state licensure as a Registered Nurse.
  • Minimum of three to five years of clinical nursing experience as a registered nurse in behavioral health.
  • Active BLS Certification

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Executes all duties of Staff Nurse, offering proficient nursing care to patients.
  • Functions autonomously as a practitioner, displaying superior problem-solving, decision-making, and critical thinking skills.
  • Provides direct patient care as required and serves as a technical expert and resource, ensuring access to expert care when needed.
  • Acts as a clinical expert, consultant, and resource for nursing unit staff to maintain consistent, high-quality patient care.
  • Coordinates unit-level quality management and performance improvement activities, initiating processes to address clinical challenges.
  • Monitors and evaluates care and practice for both self and others, collecting data to ensure the effectiveness of interventions.
  • Coordinates unit staffing and scheduling based on established standards, optimizing resource utilization for efficient patient care.
  • Facilitates efficient patient throughput by ensuring appropriate bed placement based on diagnosis, acuity, and staffing requirements.
  • Collaborates with case management and area management to ensure effective discharge planning.
  • Functions as a clinical coach, offering guidance to other clinical coaches and area preceptors.
  • Participates in planning orientation and staff development programs.
  • Regulatory Compliance and Emergency Response:
  • Supports consistent regulatory readiness for the unit/area, participating in rounding and counseling/coaching.
  • Acts as a charge nurse and shift coordinator, addressing operational issues and collaborating with management.
  • Serves as a resource during emergencies, disasters, or high-acuity events by responding, facilitating communication, and allocating resources.
  • Staff Development and Evaluation:
  • Participates in staff evaluation by providing input, supporting development, and coaching/counseling staff.
  • Coordinates special programs within their area of expertise as delegated.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Advanced skills in:
    • Clinical nursing practice, use of equipment/instruments relevant to unit/area care, according to policies, procedures and standards.
    • Effective interpersonal communication and team skills which include listening, interviewing techniques with patients, families and staff.
    • Assessment, reassessment and monitoring of patients.
    • Concise, accurate, legible documentation.
    • Problem solving techniques, critical thinking skills, decision-making
  • Knowledge and skills necessary to:
    • Provide care appropriate to meet the age and cultural needs of the patients served.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of principles of growth and development over the life span
    • Ability to assess data/interpret appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to age specific needs as well as clinical indications.
