Job Role Summary

The position will ensure a culturally appropriate communication plan is developed and implemented for a federally funded initiative to address racial health inequities in Marion County. Program strategies include policy development, systemic shifts, and environmental changes, and this position will develop educational components to support these changes.  

 

An individual in this position must be able to plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate health education and communications initiatives designed to encourage health-supporting policies and environments. Cultural relevance is a key component of REACH, and this role is heavily engaged with community-level engagement. A successful candidate will also possess strong interpersonal communication skills and be able to operate within multiple casual and formal settings to support coalitions and share resources.

 

Candidate must possess a high level of proficiency in digital communication.  This position involves a heavy emphasis on minority health, and on the importance and impact of nutrition, physical environment, and community connections.  Knowledge of the social determinants of health including how change in policies, environments, and practices impact health equity, is required.
 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in public health, health education, communication, or a related social, behavioral, or medical sciences field 
  • 1 year of related experience in health education
  • Current driver’s license and use of automobile
  • If Health Educator, Certified Health Education Specialist preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Advanced understanding of social media technology and other current communication media.
  • Understanding of racial health disparities and social inequity.
  • Awareness of Social Determinants of Health.
  • Data collection, entry, and management skills as well as data presentation skills.
  • Community health education philosophy, methodologies, principles, practices with the ability to apply this knowledge in the community organization process.
  • Understanding of adult learning principles, learning theory, and human relations.
  • Ability to function effectively in a number of different settings: coalition meetings, community groups, industry, and other outreach sites, as well as personal office and team projects.
  • Cognitive ability to read and interpret general health education materials, policies, and procedures, and translate information to more “lay” terms.
  • Ability to speak effectively before small groups of citizens, partners or employees.

Mathematical Skills

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret basic graphs.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
