Job Role Summary
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Proactively contributes to Eskenazi's mission: Advocate, Care, Teach and Serve with special emphasis on the vulnerable population of Marion County. Models Eskenazi values of Professionalism, Respect, Innovation, Development and Excellence
- Verifies patient information and copies/scans insurance information
- Performs a variety of clerical and patient service duties necessary to maintain efficient flow of operations in the medical office
- Performs data entry to check patients into clinic, updates demographic and insurance
- information and enters information into the appropriate computer system
- Performs all front desk responsibilities, usually in a small clinic environment where the staff size and patient volume dictate staff cross training and multi-tasking to include all front desk positions
- Greets the patient, answers phones, completes registration, performs check out/charge entry, referrals and medical records
- Alters activities/behaviors to reflect and ensure adequate service appropriate to the age of patients served (i.e. pediatric, adolescent, and adult)
- Answers phone lines within company guidelines, routes callers to appropriate destination, answers questions, and schedules appointments
- Thoroughly and accurately completes the telephone triage form and routes to appropriate staff
- Greets the patient and utilizes appropriate customer service skills
- Recognizes and responds to signs of patients in emergent distress and directs to appropriate clinical staff
- Retrieves and files medical records in a timely and orderly fashion; files documents into the proper location in the appropriate medical records; assembles and inspects charts for completeness and refurbishes old charts as needed; copies as needed, purges records per site guidelines
- Balances and reconciles all money collected daily
- Performs check out and charge entry in the billing system within 24 hours
- Corrects any billing errors identified by billing software in accordance with the policy
- Processes billing according to current coding guidelines including ICD-9 and CPT-4 and validates an appropriate diagnosis
- Performs preparation of professional charge batch and sends batch daily
- Resolves missing charges report
- Provides continuous feedback to site management regarding charge entry related issues
- Prepares daily deposit log and ensures summary balances reconcile to the charge tickets
- Prepares daily and monthly charge reconciliation summary to Revenue Cycle Dept.
- Processes referrals for patients seen in the Health Center. This includes: verifying patient insurance eligibility; communicating with physicians; obtaining prior authorization or pre-certification when needed; scheduling appointments consistent with patients' insurance plan, and processing all appropriate paperwork.
Job Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent required
- Over 6 months of experience in business, health care or customer service experience, or health management information of medical office setting.
- One year health care insurance experience preferred but not required
- Data entry experience
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of clinic processes
- Must pass multiple system application exams
- Working knowledge of multiple insurance plans and networks
- Alpha/numeric filing skills
- Strong computer knowledge and skills with a minimum typing speed of 30 WPM
- Effective oral/written communication skills, including the ability to communicate with patients in a manner conducive to the patient's age and developmental stage
- Ability to:
