Job Role Summary
This position performs messenger & transport duties between Marion County Public Health Department (MCPHD), Health & Hospital Corporation (H&H), the outlying health offices; picks up &/or delivers mail, supplies, equipment & fees. This position is responsible for performing messenger duties as a member of the health care team that provides services to individuals, families and various communities throughout Marion County. The courier will make special deliveries for the MCPHD Medical Director, H&H President, Vital Records and other departments as needed. This position requires good customer service skills in order to ensure that visitors/clients/staff are treated in a courteous and polite manner. Cross training for other assignments may occur as job related activities dictate.
Essential Duties
Responsibility 1: 50%
- Mail Responsibilities.
- Makes scheduled & special messenger runs between H&H, CAO and outlying MCPHD offices, Eskenazi Hospital, State Board of Health and Eskenazi Health Centers (average 70 miles per day).
- Transports/delivers mail, inter-departmental mail, messages, confidential personnel actions, drugs, supplies, lab tests, results/cultures, client records, birth & death records and financial information including the collection of fees on a daily basis.
- Accepts responsibility for maintaining oil & other fluids on MCPHD van & takes van in for services as needed & for washing van.
- Maintains client confidentiality, following HIPAA requirements.
- Delivers packets of information to H & H Corporation board at their offices and/or home.
Responsibility 2: 25%
- Clerical / Data entry.
- Cross training to assist Hasbrook Chart Room staff with records, i.e., filing, recycling, shredding, scanning, etc.
- Assumes responsibility for maintaining confidentiality of information in client records.
- Maintains any logs/spreadsheets which will facilitate work.
- Answer phones and relays messages in a courteous and timely manner.
Responsibility 3: 15%
- Meetings.
- Participate in periodic staff/committee meetings.
- Attend inservices/seminars to increase job knowledge.
- Participates in 8 hours of health fair activities per year.
- Attends mandatory MCPHD and H&H meetings; i.e., Emergency Preparedness, HIPAA; BBP, etc.
Associated Job Duties
Responsibility 4: 10%
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Frequent travel throughout Marion County.
- Employee will protect and maintain confidentiality of each client’s and employee’s medical and personal information which may be obtained in the course of job related provision of care or employment.
- Employee may need to remove confidential information from work place setting to transport to another designated setting. If the information is removed, it must be protected and secured.
- Employee must complete NIMS training 100 and 700.
- In the event of a public health emergency, employee must be available to work on week-ends or a schedule that would differ from a normal assigned workday.
- Participates in public health emergency preparedness exercises and in the response to public health emergencies, as directed.
- Participates in a minimum of two H.O.P.E. events totaling a minimum of eight (8) hours annually.
- Completes other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 1 to 3 years of previous work experience.
- Access to own car and current automobile insurance.
Licenses/Certifications Required
- Valid Indiana Driver’s license.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Must be able to organize work assignments and be self-motivated and function independently.
- Considerable physical effort is required for frequent handling of light-weight & heavy materials/supplies.
- Must be able to make deliveries quickly and accurately, especially in emergencies/deadlines.
- Assumes responsibility for maintaining confidentially of information, follows HIPAA requirements.
- Must perform duties in all weather conditions.
- Requires knowledge of alpha/numeric filing; accurate reading/recording of data.
- Must be attentive to detail.
- Must be able to work effectively under pressure.
- Must be flexible in working with a variety of community partners.
- Must be able to exercise good judgment.
- Must be able to work collaboratively with a broad range of people.
- Interacts tactfully and diplomatically with colleagues, personnel and the public.
Working Environment
- Confined and Unconfined sitting (involves many hours driving a vehicle); standing or walking to community sites, etc., climbing stairs, steady use of hands for data entry; lifting and carrying supplies and equipment.
- May be exposed to allergens of all types (i.e., pets, dust, smoke, etc.).
- In adverse weather conditions may be requested to make deliveries.
