Position Summary

The purpose of this position is to greet and direct the patient upon their arrival to the clinic according to services needed. Schedule same day and follow up appointments. Receive visitors at the front desk by greeting, welcoming and provide information to visitors as requested. Answer incoming calls discreetly and in a timely manner, screen calls, respond to inquiries and/or refer callers to the appropriate division within the clinic. Informs patients and the public of services offered, clinic hours, location, and types of payment accepted. Perform secretarial and general office support for the effective operation of the STD Control Program. 

Associated Job Duties

  • Answers calls coming into the clinic & evaluates the needs of the caller by discreetly obtaining personal health information. Schedules same day and follow up appointments to ensure that patients receive the appropriate services needed. Must exercise discretion, friendly customer service skills, & good decision-making skills when evaluating personal health information of callers who are uncertain of their needs. 
  • Directs patients to the appropriate location based off of services needed, hands out registration forms, number tracker, and checks patient in by verifying appointment on the clinic roster. Uses discretion when interacting with patients that come into the clinic. 
  • Communicates with Intake and/or back-office Support Staff when additional help is needed to register patients. Patients should be registered in a timely manner. 
  • Greets all visitors coming into the clinic by answering questions and providing information as appropriate. 
  • Notifies personnel staff when they have visitor present. Communicates missed calls or visitors in a timely manner with personnel staff either verbally, via email, or handwritten messages. 
  • Notifies appropriate personnel staff of mail delivery at the front desk for pick up. 
  • Assist other departments when assigned. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Train back-up personnel on daily tasks of the Patient Navigator position. 
  • Monitors Support Staff time-off calendar daily to stay informed of staff that may be of the office for coverage purposes. 
  • Updates phone messaging system and clinic signage for adjusted clinic hours or closings. 
  • Participates in public health emergency preparedness exercise and in the response to the public health emergencies, as directed.
  • Participate in a minimum of two H.O.P.E events totaling a minimum of (8) hours annually.


High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Work Environment

  • Standard medical office environment.
  • Exposure to communicable disease, illness and combative patients.
  • Some physical effort associated with carrying of supplies for health fairs and handling clinic supplies
