Eskenazi Health serves as the public hospital division of the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 333-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus including at a network of Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.

Job Role Summary

This position coordinates and supervises all clinical support functions in order to allow the physicians to provide the most efficient, detailed and focused examination possible. The Clinical Coordinator also performs as much clinical support as he/she can appropriately provide. This includes complex photography of the eye for diagnostic, treatment, educational and research purposes in support of the Department of Ophthalmology.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Proactively contributes to Eskenazi's mission: Advocate, Care, Teach and Serve with special emphasis on the vulnerable population of Marion County. Models Eskenazi values of Professionalism, Respect, Innovation, Development and Excellence
  • Creates and coordinates clinical support functions
  • With the appropriate approval, writes and implements procedures, processes and protocol to improve the efficiency and accuracy of physician visits
  • Supervises Ophthalmic Technician(s) to ensure efficient clinic operation and provides input to staff evaluations and disciplinary actions
  • Performs all imaging eye modalities including Humphrey Visual Fields, Goldman Visual Fields, Confrontational Visual Fields, Pachemetry, Fundus Photography/Florescence Angiogram, OCT, Pentacam Topography, IOL Maste /Immersion - A Scan, Manual and auto lensometry
  • Performs manual refraction and auto refraction
  • Performs advanced biomicroscopy
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the following tests and when they should be used: Stereo, Amsler Grid, Neuro Color plates, CFVF, Afferent Pupil Defect, Motility Assessment, Cover Test with the basic strabismus diagnosis
  • Dilates patients' eyes and administers topical ophthalmic and oral medications per physicians orders
  • Performs tonometry.
  • Performs surgical scheduling if required
  • Performs AccuCheck's
  • Attends various technical courses and seminars to continually update on new equipment, techniques, procedures, protocols and any other information necessary for the efficient performance of all job duties in a current and clinically relevant manner

Job Requirements

  • Associates degree preferred
  • Minimum of one year supervisory experience working in a hospital or patient care environment preferably within Ophthalmology
  • Certification for Ophthalmic Technician by the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
  • Knowledge of retinscopy preferred
  • Phlebotomy/blood drawing experience preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Requires knowledge and skills necessary to assess and provide care appropriate to age and developmental level of patients served.
  • Knowledge of the use of equipment, i.e., Keratomer, NIDEC, Lensometer, Octopus Visual Field Computer, cameras, fundus cameras, slit lamp bio-microscope
  • Knowledge of procedures and standards related to patient care activities
  • Knowledge of infection control principles and safety measures
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to use age appropriate communication skills
  • Knowledge of basic computer operating systems and set-up
  • Knowledge of basic anatomy, pharmacology and terminology of the eye.
