Job Role Summary

The Non-Emergency Medical Transport Driver is responsible for driving the ambulance and shuttle can to and from rehab facilities, nursing homes, home and other hospital with an EMT onboard. This position maintains the safety and security of the vehicle and equipment; assists the team leader with checking and maintaining vehicle equipment and supplies.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Transports patients to and from diagnostic procedures and tests
  • Maintains appropriate logs/records
  • Maintains clean and efficient equipment; cleans wheelchairs and stretchers after each use with disinfectant; reports defective/broken equipment to supervisor
  • Records number/type/destination of transporting orders for monthly report
  • Lifts patients onto/out of wheelchairs, stretchers, beds, etc., using the principles of body mechanics
  • Responsible for driving the ambulance and shuttle van to and from rehab facilities, nursing homes, home and other hospitals with an EMT onboard
  • Drives an emergency vehicle under emergency conditions and non-emergent conditions
  • Exercises independent judgment in critical, emergency situations
  • Maintains the safety and security of the vehicle and equipment; assists the team leader with checking and maintaining vehicle equipment and supplies
  • Participates in the Pet Therapy Program when patients request a visit

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Current CPR certification
  • Current Indiana Driver's license with motor vehicle record that meets Eskenazi Health's driving policy standards
  • Current Indiana motor vehicle insurance
  • EVOC certification acquired within 6 months of employment

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Competent in Microsoft Office and Bed Ready dispatch procedures
  • Excellent judgment and ability to prioritized and handle multiple requests calmly and effectively
  • Basic English reading and writing skills; bilingual is desired but not required
  • Knowledge of hospital layout and procedures; some knowledge of equipment handling
  • Ability to use age-appropriate communication skills
  • Good reasoning ability
  • Detail oriented
  • Knowledge of hospital policies and procedures
  • Promptness, empathy and genuine interest as perceived by patients, co-workers and staff
  • Ability to assess patient needs during transport
  • Skill in patient transport techniques and safe use of vehicle
  • Must be able to follow written/verbal instructions
  • Flexible to changing work priorities/schedules
