Job Role Summary

The Lead Histology Technician provides assistance to the manager by being the primary resource for technical expertise and operations of the section, modeling a commitment to providing exemplary care in laboratory testing and customer service. The Lead Histology Technician is sought out by others for help and information in problem solving and troubleshooting. The Lead Histology Technician performs all the functions of a Histotechnician as well as takes on additional responsibilities to ensure the section runs smoothly.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Prepares tissue specimens appropriately for surgical pathology examination, including embedding, microtomy, staining, and coverslipping
  • Prepares and evaluates reagents and solutions. Responsible for supply inventory for the section.
  • Operates and maintains laboratory instruments and equipment, documenting quality control activities and minor repairs. Informs manager of new equipment needs.
  • Evaluates the acceptability of specimens, slide preparations, and stains. Labels slides and verifies accuracy of patient information on the slides. Documents problems when necessary.
  • Maintains surgical pathology slide, block, and specimen storage for the required retention period
  • Assists laboratory management in training/competency of new employees, medical staff, residents, and PA students. Assists manager by providing input into employees' performance appraisals, and helping interview job applicants, per section's needs.
  • Ensures that all proficiency testing results/slides are assigned, completed, and submitted before the deadline. Investigates and documents any deficiencies within the required time frame.
  • Functions as a self-starter, arrives to work on time and on scheduled days, begins work promptly
  • Follows section/departmental policies and procedures to ensure minimal errors during all phases of testing. Assists management with writing and providing input into section-specific policies and procedures, and the implementation of those policies and procedures
  • Completes assignments/mandatories according to policies and procedures, with complete documentation and within the designated time frames, including, but not limited to : Procedure and policy reviews, read and signs, annual TB testing and flu shots, section competencies, proficiency testing, Eskenazi Health annual education
  • Effectively communicates with team members, laboratory management, physicians, students, and other hospital staff. Ensures that laboratory management is informed of existing and/or potential problems that may require decisions or intervention to resolve.
  • Assumes supervisory responsibilities in the absence of the manager; keeps section inspection ready
  • Performs other job duties as assigned

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Associate's degree from a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician program or other related life science program or at least 60 hours of academic college credit (including 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry). Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists HT (ASCP) and 5 years of histology laboratory experience required. Must maintain valid ASCP certification through completion of required continuing education.
