Job Role Summary
Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County (“HHC”) is a municipal corporation that oversees the operations of its Marion County Public Health Department, Eskenazi Health, Indianapolis EMS and Long-Term Care divisions. HHC’s Legal Department is looking for a motivated and talented law student to join our team as a summer legal intern to support our in-house attorneys. In this role you would be expected to assist with drafting assignments to include contracts, policies, and miscellaneous legal documents. In addition, you may be called upon to assist HHC’s Environmental Court group with assignments related to civil lawsuits against property owners to enforce compliance with local and state code standards for the maintenance of property.
Essential Duties
**All legal work assignments will be under the supervision of the general counsel or designated counsel within the department**
- Assist in providing overall service offerings of the legal department including contracts, tort claims, Environmental Court matters, and day-to-day legal assistance to other departments and/or divisions.
- Assist with the review and drafting of various contractual and procurement matters, amendments, and other legal documentation.
- Assist with various internal matters related to policy revision and development, Human Resources matters and investigations, and employee trainings.
- Draft letters and other correspondence in response to general inquiries received including public records requests.
- Research issues of law and prepare memoranda as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education/Experience:
Rising 2L or 3L student
If candidate is interested in courtroom experience with the Environmental Court group, they must be a certified legal intern under Indiana Supreme Court Admission and Discipline Rule 2.1(a) (requirements below). Otherwise, they are limited to observation and legal research tasks only.
(a) be enrolled in a school accredited as set forth in Rule 13(1(a));
(b) have satisfactorily completed one-half of the educational requirements for a first professional degree in law;
(c) have received permission from the dean of the law school to participate in a legal intern program; and
(d) have completed or be enrolled in a legal ethics or professional responsibility course as set forth in Rule 13(1)(c).
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Familiarity with municipal government, state laws, the Indiana Trial Rules, Indiana Rules of Evidence, and rules governing electronic case filings (required).
- Ability to work well independently and in a team environment.
- Ability to find, analyze and synthesize legal information from various sources, including case law, statutes, and legal databases.
- Proficiency in drafting legal documents ensuring clarity, accuracy, and conciseness.
- Ability to identify key issues in legal cases, analyze complex information, and draw logical conclusions.
- Strong written and verbal communications.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and stay organized.
Working Environment
- This is a fully in-person office environment position with no work from home option.
- Occasional physical attendance in the Marion Superior Courts (Community Justice Campus) for litigation.
