Job Role Summary
The Lead Mobile Equipment Technician performs advanced maintenance and repair tasks for motor vehicles, tractors, trailers, generators, and small engines. This role requires a high level of expertise in conducting routine service duties, inspecting vehicle conditions for safety, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. The Technician Lead will mentor lower-level technicians, stay updated on technology, and attend training as necessary to maintain skills. Performs other duties as assigned to support the team.
A Day in the Life: In this role, your day will involve a dynamic mix of shop and fieldwork. You will lead the maintenance and repair of heavy equipment and vehicles, including backhoes and semis, as well as light equipment like small engines and cars. Much of your time will be spent diagnosing complex issues, overseeing repairs, and ensuring that all tasks are completed efficiently and safely. You will also collaborate with other technicians, mentor junior staff, and engage in ongoing training to stay current with industry advancements.
Essential Duties
Vehicle & Equipment Maintenance (80%)
- Perform advanced maintenance and repair of all corporate vehicles and support equipment safely and on time.
- Lead and assist other technicians with complex maintenance and repair tasks.
- Refuel vehicles, keep accurate and up-to-date logs, and operate the corporate refueling station efficiently.
- Retrieve and deliver various materials, supplies, and automotive components as directed.
- Conduct thorough vehicle inspections to evaluate roadworthiness and address defects in compliance with Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) standards.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical issues to ensure timely repairs and minimize downtime.
- Maintain accurate records of repairs and maintenance performed on vehicles and equipment.
- Coordinate with vendors for parts and supplies and ensure inventory is maintained.
- Develop and implement maintenance protocols to enhance operational efficiency.
- Participate in safety audits and propose improvements to shop safety practices.
Associated Job Duties
- Participate in public health emergency preparedness exercises and responses as directed.
- Participate in a minimum of two H.O.P.E. events totaling at least eight (8) hours annually.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
- Assist with additional tasks as needed by the team.
· Perform other duties as assigned.
· Maintain timely and accurate information in the vehicle data file.
Qualifications
· Required: Associate or Bachelor’s degree in a related field; extensive relevant experience may substitute if supplemented by recognized industry certifications.
- 7+ years of professional mechanic experience with complex repairs, including at least 2–3 years in a supervisory or lead capacity.
- Experience with advanced electronics, alternative fuel systems, and modern vehicle telematics.
Licenses/Certifications Required
- Required: A valid Driver’s License.
- Required: Class “A” commercial driver’s license.
- Required: Multiple ASE certifications (Master Technician status) or equivalent recognized credentials.
- Preferred: Additional advanced certifications (manufacturer-specific, HVAC, etc.)
- Preferred: First Aid/CPR certification.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Expert-Level Technical Proficiency
- In-depth knowledge of all major automotive, diesel, heavy equipment, and specialized vehicle systems.
- Seasoned diagnostic capabilities for complex mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic challenges.
Fleet Management & Compliance
- Thorough understanding of fleet operations, scheduling, and regulatory compliance (OSHA, DOT, EPA).
- Ability to implement and maintain preventative maintenance programs and ensure readiness of all fleet vehicles.
Strategic Planning & Leadership
- Skilled at planning and prioritizing large-scale projects, shop workflows, and long-term equipment life-cycle strategies.
- Expertise in resource allocation, parts ordering, and cost management to optimize productivity and minimize downtime.
People Management & Communication

- Experience supervising and mentoring a diverse team of mechanics and support staff.
- Excellent communication skills for liaising with management, vendors, and external agencies.
Safety & Quality Assurance
- Champion of safety culture, able to conduct regular audits, trainings, and corrective measures.
- Maintains strict quality standards, ensuring all repairs and modifications meet or exceed OEM specifications.
Working Environment
- Tasks involve the regular and, at times, sustained performance of heavy physical effort, typically involving climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. These tasks may include lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling moderately heavy objects and materials (up to 100 pounds). Tasks involve prolonged periods of standing and working with arms above shoulder level.
- Most tasks require visual perception and discrimination. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, to perceive and discriminate depths, and to see small details accurately. Some tasks require hearing high- and low-frequency sounds at various volumes, distinguishing between sounds, and determining locations from which sounds emanate. Some tasks require the ability to carefully feel differences in surface roughness.
- Tasks are regularly performed indoors & outdoors with exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, strong odors, smoke, fumes, pollen, machinery, temperature and noise extremes, and toxic/poisonous agents.
