Job Role Summary

 

The Radiologic Technologist Specialist I Interventional Cardiac Cath performs special diagnostic radiographic procedures on designated parts of the body as required by physician orders. This position assumes responsibility for care and safety of patients' underlying interventional procedures, and cardiac catheterization examinations.

Team Overview:

The Eskenazi Health Minimally Invasive Procedures Suite (MIPS) consists of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab, the Electrophysiology Lab, and Interventional and Neurointerventional Radiology. This unit has revolutionized patient access to procedures and the way patients are cared for at Eskenazi Health. The IR Technologists are cross-trained in all of the separate procedural rooms making their skillset one of a kind and setting the care apart from other organizations. This team utilizes cutting-edge technology which provides alternatives to traditional surgery and delivers precision in minimally invasive procedures.  

 

The Cardiac Catheterization Lab provides 24/7 emergency catheterization services for ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients. Interventional cardiologists and staff are on call around the clock to provide immediate heart attack care day or night. Procedures performed in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab include:

  • Coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary interventions (stent placement, angioplasty, percutaneous interventions, and orbital atherectomy)
  • Pericardiocentesis
  • Right and left heart catheterization
     

Procedures performed in the Electrophysiology (EP) lab include:

  • EP studies and ablations
  • Internal cardiac defibrillator (ICD) placement and cardiac resynchronization therapy
  • Pacemaker and loop recorders
     

The Interventional and Neuro interventional Radiology labs provide 24/7 emergency procedures for traumas and stroke care. Procedures performed in the Interventional Radiology lab include:

  • Traumas
  • Embolization
  • Y90s
     

Procedures performed in the Neuro interventional Radiology lab include:

  • Stroke
  • Embolization
  • Carotid procedures
  • Angiograms 

Schedule:

The position is scheduled 8:00am-4:30pm; Mon-Fri. This position does have a call requirement, when on call, you must be within a 30-minute response window. Call during the week and weekends are divided evenly between staff, and the only call schedule is created as a team. Call ranges from 4:30 pm – 8 am Monday through Friday and 7 am – 7 am on Saturday and Sunday.

Job Requirements

Graduation from an AMA approved Radiologic Technology Program required; 

  • ARRT registered which includes compliance with professional CEU requirements
  • Licensed with the State of Indiana as a Radiologic Technologist
  • Maintains and shows proof of current CPR Certification
  • Obtains ACLS within 6 months of hire
  • ARRT certification in Interventional Radiology/ Cardiac Interventional; preferred

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

 

Proactively contributes to Eskenazi Health's mission: Advocate, Care, Teach and Serve with special emphasis on the vulnerable population of Marion County. Models Eskenazi Health values

  • Performs special diagnostic radiographic procedures on designated parts of the body as required by physician orders
  • Selects proper exposure factors for radiographic equipment for each examination
  • Determines appropriate equipment for use, i.e. pressure injectors, pressure monitor, mapping system, other imaging equipment.
  • Utilizes protective shielding, immobilization and supportive devices when required
  • Assumes responsibility for care and safety of patients while they are undergoing interventional procedures in the labs.
  • Assists Radiologists/Cardiologists during special procedures and cardiac catheterizations
  • Provides emotional support to patients and keeps them informed regarding what they will experience during the procedure.
  • Participates in the instruction of AS and BS students rotating through department
  • Following HIPAA requirements, prepares digital images for providers outside of the Eskenazi Health system
  • Maintains supplies required for radiographic rooms, such as contrast media, pharmaceuticals, etc.
  • Keeps rooms adequately stocked, and equipment clean; adheres to infectious control policies in maintaining a semi-sterile environment
  • Prepares equipment to be sent to CSR for sterilizing procedures (i.e., wrapping, cleaning, labeling).
  • Prepares procedure trays for interventionists prior to all exams. Alters activities to reflect/ensure adequate care appropriate to the age of patients served (i.e., adolescent, geriatric, pediatric, neonatal, adult) as described in the area/unit age-specific and/or job specific competencies

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

 

  • Ability to use age appropriate communication skills
  • Excellent command of radiologic peripheral, neuro, vascular and cardiac anatomy
  • Basic understanding of the physics of ultrasound
  • Knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served
  • Must demonstrate growth and development knowledge principles over the life span and possess the ability to assess data/interpret appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to age-specific needs and cognitive abilities detailed in the department/area/unit job competencies
  • Knowledge of all radiologic equipment, drug utilization, contrast media, pressure injectors, and technical procedures (within assigned area)
  • Working knowledge of the HIS, RMS and associated programs, ie. Film Tracking System
  • Completes all studies through the RMS computer system
  • Hospital protocols/procedures, safety procedures to minimize risk to patients, coworkers and self
  • Knowledgeable of and complies with the Hospital's Infection Control and Communicable Disease policies and procedures
  • Ability to:
    • follow both written/oral instructions
    • handle patient contacts with high degree of tact
    • elect proper protocols for all exams
    • select proper exposure factors to result in the desired view
    • select appropriate catheters and guide-wires for specified exams
    • enter all appropriate patient data
  • Fundamental knowledge of computer applications
  • Ensures completion of all studies through the RMS computer system
  • Understands and performs required PI tasks and provides adequate documentation.
  • Demonstrates flexibility with changing work duties, priorities
  • Assists in other departmental areas, i.e., reception areas, transportation of patients and film management
  • Displays an ability to be observant and perceptive to changing patient conditions while under their care.
  • Reports questionable conditions to physicians/nursing personnel
  • Attending departmental in-service meetings.
  • Provides adequate and timely communications with staff
  • Ability to work effectively under stress/heavy workload
  • Must prioritize work assignments, i.e., decisions must be made to determine how quickly a case needs to be scheduled for an examination
