Eskenazi Health serves as the public hospital division of the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 333-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus including at a network of Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.

Job Role Summary

The Interpreter provides medical interpretation services to patients, advocacy on behalf of patients, and interpretation services in any part of the site. This position acts as a liaison between patients and health care providers (making and canceling appointments, etc.) as needed.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Proactively contributes to Eskenazi's mission: Advocate, Care, Teach and Serve with special emphasis on the vulnerable population of Marion County; models Eskenazi Health values of Professionalism, Respect, Innovation, Development and Excellence
  • Provides medical interpretation services to patients, advocacy on behalf of patients, and interpretation services in any part of the site; acts as a liaison between patients and health care providers (making and canceling appointments, etc.) as needed
  • Works with patients, families, health providers and other social services offices to interpret
  • Interprets medical information/instructions to and from patients exactly as communicated
  • Interprets office policies and procedures (co-pays, financial counseling, insurance cards, etc)
  • Interprets HIPAA regulations pertaining to patient confidentiality and the release of information
  • Makes reminder phone calls to patients regarding scheduled appointments
  • Adheres to company policies, procedures and standards while demonstrating a professional and positive image to the public
  • Interprets relevant health education for patients and families, using educational and communication techniques specific to the patients' (and/or family members') culture and developmental age
  • Acts as a resource for other staff to provide interpreting services; identifies problems and guides staff to appropriate solutions
  • Adheres to state and federal safety guidelines

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Two years of experience working in a health care environment
  • Successful completion of assessment to determine proficiency in required language
  • Successful completion of Bridging the Gap course
