Eskenazi Health serves as the public hospital division of the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 333-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus including at a network of Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.

Job Role Summary

The Haitian/Creole Medical Interpreter provides interpreting services to all Haitian/Creole-speaking customers and patients within the Eskenazi Health system. Areas of interpretation include, but are not limited to, Emergency Department, Clinical Decision Unit, Critical Incident Unit, Surgical Areas, Lab Areas, Outpatient Clinics, and Inpatient Services. Interpreters will remain available and ready to interpret in any area within the organization that poses a need as directed by leadership. This position is patient facing within our system and the role requires that each Interpreter maintain positive customer and employee interactions at all times This position reports to the Interpreter Services Manager.  

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

•    Provides precise and accurate interpretation services to Haitian/Creole-speaking patients and ensures complete understanding of medical information between staff and patient 
•    Provides a positive and culturally sensitive experience to the patient and provider in order to facilitate the most comprehensive interpretative experience 
•    Maintain high linguistic proficiency in both English and Haitian/Creole languages surrounding medical terminology and subject matter 
•    Ensures a neutral facilitation of information/communication between the two experts (the provider as the technical expert and the patient as the expert in regards to their needs and personal health)
•    Follows documentation procedures for each interpretation encounter. Documents all inquiries accurately for medical, legal, and statistical purposes
•    Maintains competency with needed computer based programming including the electronic medical record platform
 

Job Requirements

•    Bachelor’s degree is preferred, but not required 
•    Bilingual in English and Haitian/Creole
•    Strong medical terminology in both English and Haitian/Creole
•    Must have completed “Bridging the Gap” certification. National  Haitian/Creole certification is a plus
 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

•    Strong organizational and time management skills
•    Strong demonstration of a positive demeanor, exemplary customer service skills, and excellent communication skills (including appropriate gender/age/education communications)
•    Possesses competent knowledge of and ability to use computers, standard office equipment, Windows, Microsoft Word/Excel, and Internet Explorer
