Job Role Summary
Promote, maintain, and improve individual and community health by assisting individuals and communities to adopt healthy behaviors. Collect and analyze data to identify community needs prior to planning implementing, monitoring and evaluating programs designed to encourage healthy lifestyles, policies and environments.
**This position is funded from grant and/or contract funding which is renewed under the provisions of the grantor of the contract. Therefore, this position is contingent upon continuation of funding of these grants and/or contracts and your satisfactory job performance.
Essential Duties
- Collaborate with community partners to determine community health needs and develop goals for meeting needs.
- Design and conduct evaluations and diagnostic studies to assess the quality and performance of health education programs.
- Develop and present health education and promotion programs such as training workshops, conferences and school/community presentations.
- Develop and conduct health needs assessment and other health surveys.
- Prepare and distribute health education materials, including reports, bulletins, and visual aids such as films, videotapes, photographs and posters.
- Provide guidance to agencies and organizations in the assessment of health education needs and development/deliver health education programs.
- Develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with agencies and organizations interested in public health care.
- Develop and maintain health education library to provide resources for staff and community agencies.
- Document activities such as: presentations conducted, and persons assisted (contact forms).
- Coordinate grant applications to obtain funding for health education programs.
- MUST be willing to work weekends and evenings.
- Provide staff support to Public Health Administration, including HEPT Administrator, other HEPT staff and the Public Health Director to ensure overall health education goals are met.
- Train at the appropriate National Incident Management System (NIMS) and Incident Command System (ICS) level.
- Participate in the response to public health emergencies, as directed.
- Participates in a minimum of eight H.O.P.E. events annually.

Qualifications
- Completion of a baccalaureate degree in health education, public health, community health or related social service or behavioral science.
- Ability to analyze data and other information to evaluate programs and to determine the needs of the people served
- Ability to influence and promote public health through effective teaching and public speaking
- Must be a good listener and be culturally sensitive to respond to the needs of the people they serve.
- Ability to think creatively regarding how to improve the health of audiences through health education programs.
- Ability to effectively write proposals to develop programs and apply for grant funding.
- Work effectively/provide leadership in complex, stressful situations, exercise
- Deductive reasoning, professional judgment, and accept responsibility for decisions.
Licenses/Certifications Required
- Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) Certification preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Basic understanding of social media technology and other current communication media.
- Basic understanding of the program planning process.
- Community health education philosophy, methodologies, principles, practices with the ability to apply this knowledge in the community organization process.
- Understanding of adult learning principles, learning theory, and human relations.
Ability to:
- assess individuals and groups for level of literacy and for culturally specific needs.
- function effectively in a number of different settings: schools, community groups, industry, clinics, and district health offices.
- assess the impact of health education activities and modify them accordingly.
- Cognitive ability to read and interpret general health education materials, policies, and procedures.
- Ability to speak effectively before small groups of citizens or employees.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Working Environment
- Primarily office environment; class instruction and/or outreach activities in varied public sites throughout the county.
- Physical demands include lifting medium weight materials on a routine basis.
