Job Role Summary

The EMT Trainee actively participates in the EMT-Basic course to become a certified EMT-Basic provider and completes exams to become both a state of Indiana and nationally certified EMT-Basic provider.  Once the course and exams are successfully completed, the EMT Trainee is eligible for an EMT position.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Actively participates in EMT-Basic course, completes course assignments and passes quizzes and tests
  • Proactively identifies self-study opportunities and engages instructor as needed for optimal performance 
  • Successfully completes the practical exam for becoming a certified EMT-Basic provider within 2 weeks following the completion of the course work
  • Successfully completes the National Registry of EMT Basic examination to become a certified EMT-Basic provider within 2 weeks following the completion of the practical exam.

Under the supervision of instructors, Field Training Officers, or other designated personnel the following job functions will be completed:

  • Provides emergency medical care at the basic life support level according to Indianapolis EMS practices and policies, established protocols, verbal and written orders and state regulations
  • Monitors patients while in transport and continues treatment initiated on the scene
  • Drives an emergency vehicle under emergent and non-emergent conditions
  • Perform patient assessments and initiate appropriate treatment
  • Maintains ambulance in operable conditions, which includes cleanliness, orderliness and prompt restocking of equipment and supplies; determines vehicle readiness by checking fuel, lights, tires, and start/stop capabilities
  • Maintain communication and medical equipment in the field and report defects for repair or replacement
  • Respond to runs from dispatcher
  • Coordinate with healthcare facilities regarding patients' vital statistics
  • Complete patient care reports and other documentation
  • Provides age-appropriate care (i.e. neo-natal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric)Reassures patients and bystanders by working in a confident and efficient manner
  • Coordinates public safety personnel in emergency situations
     

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Six months work experience in any setting
  • Valid Indiana Driver’s License - must meet and remain in compliance with IEMS driver eligibility policy

Must be able to:

  • Actively learn and apply EMT skills taught in the EMT Basic class

  • Ability to follow detailed or general instructions, verbal and written legibly, accurately, and confidentially use and record data.
  • Study and learn complex subjects 
  • Identify gaps in learning and work to close gaps
  • Communicates verbally in person and via telephone and telecommunications mediums using the English language
  • Hear and understand spoken information from co-workers, patients, physicians, dispatchers, other allied health personnel bystanders, and public safety professionals
  • Read and comprehend written materials under stressful conditions

Responsibility

  • Maintains patient and family confidentiality
  • Maintains protected health information in accordance with HIPAA privacy guidelines and regulations

Judgment

  • Incumbent may work under close supervision following established routines or assigned work with limited employee latitude

Contact - Internal/External

  • Regular contact with instructors, FTOs, clinicians physicians and medical staff, police and fire departments to provide and obtain information and instructions
  • Regular contact with general public to provide care

Special Effort Required

  • Lift up to 125 lbs. equally distributed and up to 250 lbs. with assistance
  • Heavy lifting for sustained periods; heavy and awkward lifting of patients and/or equipment over difficult terrain for several yards; intense strain for short periods of time
  • Normal use of limbs, eyes, ears and voice required to treat patients and to operate sophisticated electronic devices
  • Drive an emergency vehicle under emergency conditions and non-emergent conditions
  • Carry a stair chair 30 yards, up two flights of stairs, then down two flights of stairs with a patient attached
  • Carry tech box, oxygen equipment bag and ECG monitor up two flights of stairs
  • Kneel, stoop, bend, crawl, walk and crouch for extended periods of time, on uneven surfaces and confined spaces, including kneeling long enough to perform two hundred chest compressions in 2 minutes

  • Works in both a well-lit and properly equipped ambulance and in inadequately lighted spaces with no backup equipment or personnel
  • Environments involving crowds, noise, and confusion in all temperatures and inclement weather conditions
  • Daily involvement with hazardous working conditions, chance of serious injury or loss of life
