Job Role Summary

The Dental Assistant provides certified dental assisting skills. This position devotes full attention to job duties for the entire work period and successfully completes the tasks assigned for the proper and safe care of patients and operations of the dental clinic. The Dental Assistant successfully demonstrates compliance with quality assurance, improvement and safety requirements. This position consistently shows initiative, efficiency, problem solving skills, high attention to detail, and friendly customer service skills.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Prepares operatory units, equipment and supplies for scheduled and non-scheduled dental procedures
  • Checks for patient arrival and seats patients promptly for dental services
  • Reviews patient health and dental histories; obtains the weight and blood pressure of patients as required
  • Takes and mounts dental radiographs as directed by the dentist; maintains a current x-ray certification
  • Accurately charts dental findings as directed by the dentist/hygienist
  • Assists the dentist(s) in preventive care, operative treatment, periodontal therapy, limited endodontic care, simple oral surgery, and other dental treatment procedures provided by the dentist(s); Assists the dental hygienist in periodontal charting, patient management, operatory set up and clean up when directed
  • May place sealants if trained; may serve as an Expanded Duties Assistant if certified
  • Provides post-op instructions, oral hygiene instruction, and other important information to patients
  • Maintains an organized inventory of dental equipment and supplies; orders additional equipment and supplies when needed
  • Applies universal precautions in the care of all patients
  • Breaks down and sets up operatory units using proper infection control procedures and supplies according to OSHA, the state of Indiana and Eskenazi Health guidelines, regulations or statutes
  • Cleans and maintains dental office surfaces (cabinets, countertops, etc.), equipment (X-ray units, sterilizers, ultrasonics, and operatory units, etc.) and instruments as directed by the manufacturer and in compliance with OSHA, the state of Indiana and Eskeanzi Health guidelines, regulations or statutes
  • May answer the clinic phone, schedule patients, verify insurance, and enter data
  • Scans documents into OnBase and may index electronic dental records
  • Must read, acknowledge and comply with dental department quality assurance/improvement policies and procedures in accordance with the ADA, OSHA, CDC, State of Indiana and Eskenazi Health guidelines, regulations or statutes.
  • Must read, have knowledge of and comply with all Personnel Policies and Procedures as established by Eskenazi Health
  • Must participate in health fairs as required; must be available to work on weekends or a schedule that would differ from a normal assigned workday
  • Must complete NIMS training 100 and 700. In the event of a public health emergency, must be available to work on weekends or a schedule that would differ from a normal assigned workday.
  • May be assigned or need to travel to any MCPHD dental clinic, site or Smile Mobile
  • May transport supplies to/from the Hasbrook Building to/from dental clinics
  • Must have access to reliable transportation at all times; this position is considered a driving position and is covered by the Eskenazi Health driver policy

  • Participates on committees and/or professional associations

Job Requirements

  • Completion of Dental Assisting Training
  • At least three months of previous dental assisting training
  • Dental Radiograph certification with the State of Indiana
