Eskenazi Health serves as the public hospital division of the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 327-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus as well as at 10 Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.

Job Role Summary

The Cashier/Cafeteria is responsible for all money and money transactions for food sales made to cafeteria patrons. This position sets up station by getting daily bank/change needed from locked safe, checks register for proper working order, and cleans station and register. This position cleans cafeteria by wiping tables, chairs and conveyer belt, and filling condiment containers during cafeteria non-service hours.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Proactively contributes to Eskenazi Health's mission: Advocate, Care, Teach and Serve with special emphasis on the vulnerable population of Marion County. Models Eskenazi Health's values.
  • Responsible for all money and money transactions for food sales made to cafeteria patrons.
  • Sets up station by getting daily bank/change needed from locked safe, checks register for proper working order, and cleans station and register.
  • Scans cafeteria patron's loaded trays in order to compute bill on register, rings, appropriate key, i.e., cash, clinic charges, volunteers, etc.
  • Collects patron's money and deposits money per organization process.
  • During cafeteria non-service hours, clean cafeteria by wiping tables, chairs and conveyor belt, and filling condiments containers.
  • Sets up menu board for following meal, lists and labels foods on steam table.
  • Sets up/breaks down/decorates cafeteria for special functions, i.e. parties/luncheons/conferences.
  • Effective communication skills; friendly, efficient customer service required.
  • Maintains age and job specific competencies as described according to department/area/unit specific competencies.

Job Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED) required
  • A minimum of six months as a cashier in a retail setting preferred
  • At least one year experience with direct customer contact.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Skills in basic numerical aptitude, finger dexterity, good eye/hand coordination.
  • Knowledge/Ability to use a touch screen cash register system.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a professional, courteous manner with patients, the public, hospital personnel, work effectively under stressful conditions, deadlines, solve routine job-related functions, concentrate on details and work with accuracy.
  • Ability to use age appropriate communication skills.
  • Ability to organize work duties; is detailed-oriented, accurate work with large sums of money. Works effectively under time limitations/deadlines, problem-solving and stress situations including multiple patrons.
