Eskenazi Health serves as the public hospital division of the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 315-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus as well as at 10 Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.

 

JOB SUMMARY:

The Prep Cook is responsible for preparing and portioning food items intended for patients, retail dining guests, employees, visitors, and external clients. The Prep Cook is assigned to independently prepare cold food items such as salads, desserts, and sandwiches in addition to portioning and serving prepared items. This position requires frequent standing, walking, ability to read and follow a standardized recipe, basic food handling knowledge, a sense of urgency, and high kitchen sanitation and safety standards.  

 

Position hours: part-time evenings (6pm-10pm), variable weekend shift hours

 

REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Ability to read, write and understand English
  • Ability to withstand sudden temperature changes from heat of kitchen to cold of the freezers
  • Ability to safely transports hot pans from range or oven to steam stable and is able to maneuver within the kitchen and walk-in freezer and cooler
  • Demonstrates proper use of equipment
  • Ability to follow infection control policies and procedures
  • Ability to follow all Food and Nutrition Services policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of safe food handling practices
  • Knowledge of modified and  mechanically altered diets served
  • Ability to use age appropriate communication skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a professional, courteous manner with food service staff and other hospital wide staff
