Eskenazi Health serves as the public hospital division of the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 327-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus as well as at 10 Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.

Job Role Summary

The Cashier II performs a variety of clerical, financial, and patient accounting services necessary to maintain efficient flow of operations in the clinic/hospital/office setting. This position processes and properly receipts payments from patients and guarantors, as well as non-patient items such as miscellaneous revenue, grant funds, petty cash reimbursements/replenishments and general fund payments.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Proactively contributes to Eskenazi Health's mission: Advocate, Care, Teach and Serve with special emphasis on the vulnerable population of Marion County. Models Eskenazi Health's values
  • Performs a variety of clerical, financial, and patient accounting services necessary to maintain efficient flow of operations in the clinic/hospital/office setting
  • Processes and properly receipts payments from patients and guarantors, as well as non-patient items such as miscellaneous revenue, grant funds, petty cash reimbursements/replenishments and general fund payments
  • Processes, receives, and prepares deposits going to multiple bank locations daily
  • Prepares and maintains log of outgoing deposits, ensuring deposit log is signed out by the armored courier prior to their removal from the Cashier's office
  • Prepares Miscellaneous Revenue General Ledger entry forms
  • Orders Currency and Coin shipments for hospital and ensures timely and accurate depositing for offsetting orders received
  • Prepares Excel Spreadsheet reports as required, documenting deposits and reconciling bank statements
  • Collects reporting data, audit, and assists in balancing of Pharmacy deposit items as reported by armored courier service (i.e. CompuSafe and/or SafePoint)
  • Maintains proper security of cash, negotiable items, and PHI
  • Balances cash drawer daily, prior to leaving for the day
  • Balances contents of safe
  • Participates in unscheduled audit of Cashier's office once monthly as directed by Supervisor, Manager or Director
  • Utilizes reports to gather and compile information for the preparation of daily, weekly, or monthly reporting of financial data
  • Ensures accurate and timely processing of deposit in route to bank
  • Ensures the availability of change on hand for customers
  • Maintains a professional work environment
  • Performs weekly auditing of vault to ensure funds are accounted for
  • Assists customers with all requests
  • Researches account information within the various patient accounting systems
  • Determines and directs customers to various locations of the hospital
  • Responsible for the development, maintenance, and updating of spreadsheets
  • Acts as a liaison between patients, departments, and other divisions within EHS
  • Participates in orientation/instruction of new personnel as required
  • Participates in quality improvement processes as requested by Director/Manager
  • Communicates potential complaints to management in a timely manner

Job Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED, with post-secondary education courses or certification in Business, Computers, or Office Management
  • Associate's Degree preferred
  • Minimum of one year of experience in business office, office management or health information management required
  • Must be proficient in 10key and capable of typing a minimum of 40 wpm

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Skills in multi-tasking between multiple systems, including strong data management and MS-Excel skills
  • Various patient accounting systems
  • Microsoft Office products (Word and Excel required); ability to learn and use with proficiency additional operating systems as needed for completion of job duties
  • Positive demeanor, excellent customer service skills, and good verbal/written communication skills with the ability to use age appropriate communications
  • Professional appearance and approach
