Job Role Summary

Gives basic breastfeeding information, encouragement, and support to Women, Infant and Children Program (WIC) pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Office equipment and proper telephone etiquette.
  • Current lactation practices and terminology or the willingness to learn
  • Use effective and efficient time management skills under pressure of patient volume.
  • Work independently.
  • Pleasantly communicate verbally and in writing with the public, assigned hospital staff and WIC staff.
  • Be flexible to changing work duties.
  • Operate office equipment especially computers.
  • Bi lingual is preferred.


  • Completion of high school or GED.
  • Having breastfed at least one baby (does not have to be currently breastfeeding).
  • Previous or current participation in the WIC Program
  • Experience in social work, counseling preferred.
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • IBCLC preferred
  • Valid Indiana driver's license and Access to personal transportation

Essential Duties

  • Work to increase: 1) breastfeeding initiation rate and 2) exclusive breastfeeding and duration.
  • Timely follow-up (per Loving Support guidelines) to the breastfeeding and pregnant women and referral made to breastfeeding expert
  • Accurately document all breastfeeding contacts and pump follow-ups in WISE breastfeeding notes, based on 10 WISE chart audits annually
  • Actively take part in World Breastfeeding week/month annually
  • Demonstrate 3-Step Counseling skills, so as to positively promote breastfeeding and support clinic efforts to educate and encourage participants to breastfeed, based on 3 observations annually
