Eskenazi Health serves as the public hospital division of the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 327-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus as well as at 10 Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.

Job Role Summary

Under the general direction of the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the Area Operations Director (AOD) with Eskenazi Health Center (EHC) will, in collaboration with others Directors, provide leadership in aligning the health centers to the mission, vision and values of Eskenazi Health (EH), and strategic plans of Eskenazi Health and Eskenazi Health Center. The Area Operations Director is responsible for leading the health centers in the area of business development, financial operations, performance improvement initiatives, resource management, physician collaboration and general operations with primary care. The Area Operations Director is also responsible for the supervision, coordination, and direction of health center managers. In collaboration with the physicians, advance providers, administration and medical practice care teams, this position is responsible for leading initiatives for Eskenazi Health Center while maintaining high levels of quality and patient satisfaction scores.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Customer Service:
  • Responds promptly and with caring actions to patients and employees in a manner that respects psychosocial, spiritual and cultural beliefs
  • Represents the health centers in meetings with the public and with other agencies
  • Attends health center meetings to promote communication, assess and resolve needs and foster teamwork; keeps staff informed of organizational activities and promotes mission and goals
  • Develops positive relationships with external regulatory agencies, and establishes effective collaborative relationships with physicians and internal customers at every level of the organization

Quality:
  • Contributes to the success of the organization by participating in quality/safety meetings and process improvement activities
  • Assures that all new health center managers are properly trained and oriented
  • Assists health center managers in continuing development of leadership skills
  • Ensures transparency in data sharing and routinely participates in clinic service excellence huddles

Productivity:
  • Oversees health center managers to assure appropriate and timely schedules for adequate coverage for operation and health center staff
  • Monitors health center productivity; in collaboration with Eskenazi Health Center senior leadership team makes necessary recommendations or changes to increase patient show rate, improve patient flow and maximize provider productivity, and monitors redesign implementations and results
  • Communicates with Health Center Management and COO on a regular basis to resolve scheduling or health center specific problems that affect efficient functioning of health center

Operational Efficiency:
  • Develops systems for the evaluation, analysis and transfer of data pertaining to operations
  • Maintains professional working relationships with all levels of staff, clients, public and other departments and divisions of Eskenazi Health
  • Provides leadership and direction to Health Center Managers; fosters accountability, good communication and excellence in employees

Compliance:
  • Assures compliance with all regulations as required by third party payers, and state and federal programs; participates in audits by regulatory authorities and conducts internal audits on a regular basis to determine compliance and areas for improvement in coordination with appropriate staff; prepares and disseminates results and corrective action plans
  • Complies with all regulations regarding corporate integrity and security obligations; reports unethical, fraudulent or unlawful behavior or activity
  • Acts as a resource person for staff in regards to policies, procedures, various funding sources, etc.

Financial Stability:
  • In concert with COO and Health Center Management, monitors health center expenses in order to maximize cost effectiveness of operations; analyzes financial information of each health center and determines reasons for discrepancies between health centers for specific line item costs, and if warranted, works with the health centers to bring costs into compliance
  • Collaborates with senior leadership team to determine elements of operations and financial data utilized in assessing operations outcomes

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing, Business Management or a health care related field required; Master's degree in Nursing, Business Management or a health care related field preferred
  • Prior management experience preferred
  • Three years of experience in an ambulatory healthcare setting required
  • Medical terminology, ICD-10/CPT coding and billing experience required
  • Quality, process improvement and lean training preferred
  • Experience with policy and procedure development preferred
  • Nursing or related health profession background preferred
  • Bilingual skills preferred
