Job Role Summary

This position, under the general supervision of the breastfeeding Coordinator is responsible for assisting BFC in development of policies, procedures, implementation and evaluation of the breastfeeding program within established federal, state and local agency guidelines and regulations of Women, Infants and Children Supplemental Nutrition Program (WIC). This position is also responsible for coordinating all components of the WIC pump and supply program and ensuring that inventory is maintained between all Marion County WIC clinics. 

Essential Duties

  • Assists Breastfeeding Manager in planning, implementing, and evaluating local agency breastfeeding activities. 
  • Assists Breastfeeding Manager in ensuring that local agency staff is properly trained on breastfeeding education and support. 
  • May provide ongoing supervision and support of local agency breastfeeding staff (including but not limited Marion County WIC Drop In Center Office Coordinator). 
  • Keeps current with up-to-date breastfeeding information and disseminates this as well as FNS-provided information to other local agency staff. 
  • Identifies, coordinates, and collaborates with community breastfeeding stakeholders. 
  • Monitors local agency breastfeeding rates. 
  • Ensures that breast pump and supply issuance, inventory, and maintenance are logged and monitored at all Marion County WIC clinics.
  • Attends quarterly Breastfeeding Coordinator meetings hosted by the Indiana State WIC breastfeeding team. 
  • Assist BFC in Coordinating and providing information, counseling and support to WIC participants prenatal and post-partum, local WIC staff and Marion County Health Department (MCHD) staff, as well as community members, to increase breastfeeding success and duration. 
  • Attend Monthly/quarterly State Breastfeeding Coordinators Meeting & events.
  • Provide updates to Marion County Staff on Breastfeeding & Pump policies .
  • Maintain confidentiality of all client records and information as specified by Health Insurance Probability and Accountability act of 1996. 
  • Participate in public health emergency preparedness exercise and respond to public health emergencies, when required. 
  • Participate in a minimum of two H.O.P.E events totaling of minimum eight (8) hours annually. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Associated Job Duties

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Transport, on occasion, client information and/or supplies between MCHD health offices following HIPAA guidelines.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Assist Breastfeeding coordinator with all aspects of the Breastfeeding Program of Marion county WIC. 
  • Provides direct supervision of Marion County WIC Drop In Center Office Coordinator.

Qualifications

  • Must be one of the following:
    • Registered Nurse (R.N.)
    • Registered Dietitian (R.D)
  • On-going education and/or training in lactation management.
  • Current International Board certified Consultant (IBCLC) preferred; must obtain IBCLC certification within 2 years.
  • Has experience in program management.
  • Has, at minimum, 1 year of experience in counseling breastfeeding parents.
  • Professional licenses/certification as appropriate.
  • Must be able to function as a team leader and advisor as it relates to employee management and development of breastfeeding efforts internally and externally.
  • Valid Indiana driver’s license and access to a personal car.

Licenses/Certifications Required

  • Registered Nurse (R.N.)
  • Qualified Nutritionist
  • Registered Dietitian; Registration eligible to write the exam for the Commission on Dietetic Registration
  • Valid Indiana driver's license

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Thorough knowledge of WIC Supplemental Nutrition Program and principles of current breastfeeding practices.
Ability to:

  • Flexibility in work hours due to conferences/trainings/in-services, etc.

Working Environment

  • Majority of work is in the office environment, travel required between clinic sites, in and around Indianapolis for  outreach activities, trainings and other  work related activities including, but not limited to, assigned POD (point of distribution) site in the event of a  public health emergency .
  • Exposure to communicable illness and diseases due to direct and frequent client contact.
